West Midlands Young Athletes X Country League , Sandwell, 9th October 2011
Match No1 took place on Sunday 9th October at Sandwell valley country park in conditions which our track athletes would have appreciated. Our 14 runners had to negotiated probably the hardest course of this new season (very up and down).

First away were the u/11 girls led by Izabella Thompson from Louise Gallagher and Hannah Smith. Izabella made a good start while our 2 first timers over x country set off steadily. Down too and around the football pitches and Izabella is in the top half of the field while the other 2 are still finding their feet towards the rear of the field. Up the 2 climbs goes Izzy, Louise walks a bit while Hannah is now gaining in confidence and moving forward. Next across the top of the course before the downward run into the finish. Izabella finishes 43rd out off 123 finishers, Louise 96th and Hannah who was last in the early stages of the race comes home in 110th spot.

Race No3, u/11 boys, again 3 runners from the club set off on this undulating 1 mile (roughly) course. Around the pitches Joe Dodd goes through first in the 2nd half of the pack with Jasper Murphy not to far behind and having a good look around while another first timer, Mathew Smith, finds his feet. As they start to go up the climbs Mathew has moved past the other 2, Joe is struggling a bit and Jasper now passes Joe. The short striding Mathew now heads for home while Jasper and Joe contest who is going to be our 2nd counter. Finally Mathew comes in 55th out off 72 finishers, Jasper 59th and a not well Joe 60th.

Moving on our 2 under 13 boys set off on their 1 and a half mile run. They have 2 laps of the football pitches before climbing up. As they go through and around pitches for 2nd time Nathan Clitheroe appears to be moving quite well roughly half way down the field while his friend Jamie Mills has some work to do to avoid bringing up the rear. Nathan goes up the hill well and lets his legs flow on the downhill section while Jamie battles on gamely, infact, he mustered a good sprint to the finishing line. Nathan 56th out off 80, Jamie 75th.

Race No6,  u/13 girls and our largest number of runners for the day, 4 (5 to count). Joanne Humphries is first through as they go down and around the pitches (1 and a half miles to cover), her friend Katy Williams comes next just over half way down the pack while Erica Hygate and Sabrina Gallagher get to learn what x country is all about. As the field come out of their 2nd lap around pitches Jo flyes up the 2 climbs, Katy is still moving well, Erica is moving forward a little while Sabrina takes a breather or two before the climbs. Joanne is our highest finisher of the day 34th out of 118 finishers, Katy comes home strongly 89th, Erica battles through to 101st and Sabrina FINISHES 113th.

Race No 7 and our final 2 competitors William Thompson and Jonty Mills in the u/15 boys 2 mile race (2 laps). William has been having knee problems leading up to todays race, but is still never the less prepared to give it a go. For Jonty on very limited training it’s a case of mind over course. Both runners do well to overcome the 4 climbs to finish, William 68th out off 74 finishers and Jonty 73rd.

Well done to everyone for overcoming a difficult course, a big well done to our first timers and a big thank you to a very well turned out parent supporters group.
