Sheffield Half Marathon, Sunday 8th April 2018

Sunday 8th April was the date for the Sheffield half marathon, with a route change in recent years from exploring the industrial heritage of the region to one which heads out from the city centre down celebrated Ecclesall Road taking in its selection of bars, restaurants and independent shops before traversing uphill into Derbyshire giving some spectacular views of the city and the Peak District. With these scenic delights comes a route with some significant climbing, 958 ft according to the route plan, all essentially done in the first four and a quarter miles. After a gentle first mile from the city centre, the next four and a quarter miles of progressive uphill tests the legs, however once that high point has been reached significant downhill sections beckon the weary runner.

Just to add to the novelty a king and queen of the hill award is made over a timed mile towards the latter section of the climb, in case additional motivation was needed to exhaust oneself further over this section.
Wonderful marshals throughout with plenty of drinks stations, big race closed road feel, and incredibly supportive and appreciative crowds made this an event to remember, alongside the interesting yet challenging course. Highly recommended for those seeking a challenge next year, plus an impressive goody bag at the end.
