Race 1: WMYACC League 2017-2018, 15. October 2017: Hatton Country Park.

Race 1: West Midland Young Athletes Cross-Country League 2017-2018

The first meeting of the 2017-18 junior, cross-country league took place today, on a true cross-country course (with farmers’ fields to negotiate) at Hatton Country World, near Warwick.

Well done to those athletes who competed and, while four of the juniors running today were making their debut for Sparkhill Harriers, by contrast, Izabella Thompson has started competing in her eighth season. Unfortunately, a combination of football and rugby commitments, families being away for the weekend and the County Cross-Country Trials (to represent West Midland schools) taking place yesterday at Sutton Park reduced the number of athletes able to compete.

Our club had to provide finishing-funnel marshals at this meeting and Nikki Stewart, Rachel Axtell, Ambrose Turney and John Goulding willingly volunteered their time; thank you very much for assisting the Club.

Furthermore, this race report must highlight the tremendous work which has been carried out by one of our members. This particular member joined Sparkhill Harriers in the early 1980s and immediately started to help Gordon Long manage the junior, cross-country team. Consequently, he has been involved in team management of the juniors, including track-and-field athletics, for over thirty years. Of course, this was in addition to his tireless work as a coach, who very rarely misses a Tuesday or Thursday evening, let alone a Sunday morning at Swanshurst Park.

It is pleasure to take over as Sparkhill Harriers’ team manager for junior cross-country, allowing Dave to concentrate on his coaching and, on behalf of Sparkhill Harriers, I wish to thank him very much for the time and effort he has invested in the Club.

The second league-race meeting will take place at Warley Woods, near Harborne on Sunday, 19. November.
