Sunderland Half Marathon, Sunday 13th May 2018 Print

Vicki Bone writes >

Jenny and I both applied for the Great North Run but weren't lucky enough to get in. Determined to do a North East half marathon I came across the Sunderland half marathon and persuaded Jenny to give it a go too. It was the 8th year of the event and only just over 1000 entrants took part though there was a 10k event too which seemed more popular. The run marketed itself as flat but the reviews seemed to paint a different picture and actually described it as undulating so we weren't sure what to expect.

The event was very well-organised and the weather conditions were perfect for us. Although not as hilly as some of the half marathons we've done it was not flat and involved traversing the city centre shopping street about four times. The twelfth mile seemed particularly hard going and had an uphill finish to finish us off completely! Jenny did really well and took an impressive chunk off her PB (those Sunday morning training runs with Manisha certainly paid off) and achieved a very good and well-deserved time of 2.01.  I managed to knock a minute off my PB to get 1.34.33 and was very pleased to finish as 10th female finisher as Paula Radcliffe gave it a miss this year which helped us mere mortals.

Jenny seems to have the half marathon bug now and is already planning her next one. I think Sunderland was a good course and would recommend it but don't believe them when they say it's a flat course (it isn't)!
