Ballater 10, Sunday 30th July 2017 Print

Perhaps a little far away for most, but a wonderful place to run.

Where you may ask, well a quick Google map check shows a round trip from the Fox Hollies clubhouse of 816 miles so perhaps a little far for a day trip, however if you happen to be holidaying in the Cairngorms or visiting friends at nearby Balmoral for the weekend of this race I can strongly recommend. Ballater is a very pretty village or maybe a small town situated on the river Dee, and the race mainly on quiet roads, although a couple of miles were on forest roads, weaves it way alongside a couple of rivers, through forested areas, in stunningly beautiful countryside. A couple of short off road diversions (as some roads were washed away in the floods of 2015 and are not yet repaired) added to the challenge. Quite a late start for a race (midday) but given the rural nature of this part of Aberdeenshire I guess that is to allow sufficient time for participants to arrive.

The event was organised by local club Deeside runners and was well marshalled and organised. Personally I really enjoyed this event, perhaps could have gone somewhat faster, but gawping at all the gorgeous countryside as I ran is perhaps not the best single minded focus.
