Juniors

Training nights:  Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 until approximately 8:30. If not racing, distance runners train at Swanshurst Park on Sundays from 10:30 to approximately 11:30.

Training fees:  First training evening is free and, thereafter, you pay £1.00 per session.

Membership subscription (from 1st October for full year - those joining later pay an appropriate amount):  We suggest that you try up to four sessions first before committing to becoming a member. When you decide to join, it costs £20.00 for each child per year, for the first two children in a family; £10 per child thereafter. Application forms are available on this website as well as at the Club.
Membership entitles you to train and - at no extra charge (except for some additional track and field meetings) - take part in club-organized events and compete for the Club at cross-country and track and field meetings.

Competition:  During the winter season, our junior athletes compete in the West Midland Young Athletes Cross-Country League (wmyaccl.com), while, during the summer season, they compete in the Heart of England Athletics League (hofe-league.org.uk).
Juniors can also take part in the Warwickshire, Midland and National Cross-Country Championships as well as the Midland and National Cross-Country relays. In addition, they are encouraged to take part in other track and field meetings during the summer season.
In December, Sparkhill Harriers’ junior and senior runners take part in the “Christmas Handicap” - an informal and fun cross-country event organized by the Club - and, during the summer, a fun evening is arranged on the track for juniors and seniors.

Age groupings:  For cross-country events, the age groups are as at midnight on 31st August prior to the season. For track and field events, U15s shall be confined to competitors who are ages 13 or 14 on 31st August, within the competition year; U11s, U13s and U17s follow the same pattern.

Awards Evening: Awards for Sparkhill Harriers’ athletes are presented at the end of the cross-country season, along with the previous year’s track and field awards.

West Midlands young athletes XC league, Alexander Stadium, Sunday March 6th 2011 Print

Sunday March 6th and it’s the final race of the 2010/11 seasonof the West Midlands young athletes cross country league. The venue for the final meeting being the rather changing face of Alexander stadium (work being well underway on the new stand and car parking).  Our 11 junior members along with a strong contingent of parents rolled up on a chilly morning to tackle this flat course.

Race No 1 and our 3 u/11 girls (Joanne Humphries, Katy Williams and Izabella Thompson) took to the start line along with 125 other girls. The long straight run out from the start area saw Jo well to the front of the pack after the first 100 metres or so with Katy and Izabella tucked away in the middle of this large field. Down to the bottom of the course and around and heading back up, Jo is still well up in the first 10, while the other 2 are running side by side. Around the pond and the field is now well spread out as they head towards the slight uphill finish. Jo finally comes home in her best position of the 5 races (5th) with Izabella (54th) just ahead of Katy (56th). Overall Jo finishes with a record of 10th- 9th- ill- 8th-5th, a tremendous series in only her 2nd year of competition. Katy manages a respectable 31st-37th ill- 68th 56th, and finally Izabella (who still has another year in this age group) coming home 52nd- 39th-39th- 59th-54th.

Now the u/11 boys, unfortunately Sean Windsor is unable to take to the line due to sudden illness, however Nathan Clitheroe (1st outing this year), Joe Dodd, Jamie Mills and the tiny Jasper Murphy line up for this race. Same course as the girls, so off they go. Half way around Nathan is our first runner through with Joe not to far behind. Jamie is a little way back with Jasper quite close and having a good look around. Into the uphill run in and Nathan has done very well to come home (45th), Joe in only his 2nd race is (59th), Jamie (where’s the finishing line ) (70th) and a very tired but still smiling Jasper comes in 74th out off 88.

Finally its our 4 u/13 boys, Tom Dodd, William Thompson, Jonty Mills and Callum Curran. Off they go over a one and a half mile course. Half way around the main lap these lads vere left and go back down to the far end of the course for a 2nd time. Tom is up there in the first 25 or so but not looking totally comfortable. William comes next and a knee problem is holding him back. Jonty lies a bit further back while Callum is not to far behind Jonty. Again into the run in and Tom has not much more to offer (raced previous day also), William has worked his way through his problem and is certainly moving a lot quicker. Jonty is gritting his teeth and a determined Callum battles on. Positions.Tom (18th), William (53rd), Jonty (61st) and Callum 67th out off 76.

Over the 5 match series the following overall positions were obtained by our teams.

           u/11 Girls 13th out off 20

           u/11 Boys 12th out off 20

u/13 Girls 19th out off 19 (2 matches only competed in)

           u/13 Boys 13th out off 20.

Well done to all who competed during the season. Well done to William and Izabella who were the only 2 to compete in all 5 matches and a very big thank you to the Moms and Dads for officiating and supporting the youngsters.

A very BIG THANK YOU from Dave R for the card and vouchers from everyone.
