Juniors

Training nights:  Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 until approximately 8:30. If not racing, distance runners train at Swanshurst Park on Sundays from 10:30 to approximately 11:30.

Training fees:  First training evening is free and, thereafter, you pay £1.00 per session.

Membership subscription (from 1st October for full year - those joining later pay an appropriate amount):  We suggest that you try up to four sessions first before committing to becoming a member. When you decide to join, it costs £20.00 for each child per year, for the first two children in a family; £10 per child thereafter. Application forms are available on this website as well as at the Club.
Membership entitles you to train and - at no extra charge (except for some additional track and field meetings) - take part in club-organized events and compete for the Club at cross-country and track and field meetings.

Competition:  During the winter season, our junior athletes compete in the West Midland Young Athletes Cross-Country League (wmyaccl.com), while, during the summer season, they compete in the Heart of England Athletics League (hofe-league.org.uk).
Juniors can also take part in the Warwickshire, Midland and National Cross-Country Championships as well as the Midland and National Cross-Country relays. In addition, they are encouraged to take part in other track and field meetings during the summer season.
In December, Sparkhill Harriers’ junior and senior runners take part in the “Christmas Handicap” - an informal and fun cross-country event organized by the Club - and, during the summer, a fun evening is arranged on the track for juniors and seniors.

Age groupings:  For cross-country events, the age groups are as at midnight on 31st August prior to the season. For track and field events, U15s shall be confined to competitors who are ages 13 or 14 on 31st August, within the competition year; U11s, U13s and U17s follow the same pattern.

Awards Evening: Awards for Sparkhill Harriers’ athletes are presented at the end of the cross-country season, along with the previous year’s track and field awards.

Contacts:  Dave Reed for inquiries relating to coaching; Nick Stringer regarding cross-country events; Hilary Mann for membership inquiries; and Rob Mills for matters concerning safeguarding and welfare.

Third league race of wmyaccl.com (race 3 cancelled), 14. January  2018: Abington Park, Northampton.
Having passed the mid-point of the West Midland Young Athletes Cross-Country League 2017-2018 meetings with a cancelled meeting at Perry Park in December, Sparkhill’s junior harriers competed on Sunday around the undulating fields and tree-lined tracks of Abington Park; Sparkhill’s senior men last competed here during the 2011-2012 season when in Division II.

Well done to those athletes who raced on Sunday - with improvements in position across the board – and commiserations to Ben Frost who was unable to complete his race.

Thanks to Rob Mills and Dave Reed for continually supporting the young athletes at each meeting.

The fourth and final race meeting will take place on Sunday, 11. February at Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton and, if everyone were to run who’d taken part this season, we’d have ten competitors.

Christmas Handicap and Warwickshire XC Championships. Print

Since the third cross-country league race was called off in December due to snow, Sparkhill’s Juniors have taken part in two cross-country events.

The first event was Sparkhill Harriers’ Christmas Handicap which took place on Sunday, 17. December 2017.
Junior and senior harriers set off together, running between one and five 1700m laps on a challenging, muddy course around Fox Hollies Park; afterwards, some more senior members were reminiscing about the five cross-country league races that took place there in the late 90s and early 00s. It was very pleasing to see junior athletes, Aaliyah, Grace, Alice, Izabella, Lola, Charlotte and Zac, taking on the testing course - made more difficult in the rain. A big thank you to the marshals: Hilary, Ambrose, Bob and Emma; to those who set up the course: Craig, Barry, Stuart and Emma; to those providing welcome, post-race refreshments: Ella, Callum and Charles; to Craig for determining how many laps each individual had to run; and to Barry for leading the festive warm-up.

The second was the Warwickshire County Cross-Country Championships which took place on Saturday, 6. January 2018.Prior to the Senior Women’s and Men’s races which completed the meeting, six Juniors ran on a firm, undulating course in Warley Woods Park. Well done to all the junior athletes who competed, especially to Josh who was running his first race for Sparkhill this season and to Izabella who received an invitation form for the Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships in March.

Race 2: West Midland Young Athletes XC League 2017-2018, 19. Nov 2017: Warley Woods. Print

The second meeting of the 2017-18 junior, cross-country league took place on Sunday, on a challenging cross-country course – apparently longer than Hatton - which undulated around Warley Woods.

Well done to those athletes who competed and especially to Josh and Lola, who were running their first league race for Sparkhill Harriers and both finished strongly. Izabella’s position was much improved as she made her way through the field during the race and Prav consolidated his result from his first race. Both Zac and Dylan ran the extra mile (literally) in their first league race in the U17s, while illness and injury respectively prevented two other juniors from running on the day.

Race 1: West Midland Young Athletes Cross-Country League 2017-2018

The first meeting of the 2017-18 junior, cross-country league took place today, on a true cross-country course (with farmers’ fields to negotiate) at Hatton Country World, near Warwick.

Well done to those athletes who competed and, while four of the juniors running today were making their debut for Sparkhill Harriers, by contrast, Izabella Thompson has started competing in her eighth season. Unfortunately, a combination of football and rugby commitments, families being away for the weekend and the County Cross-Country Trials (to represent West Midland schools) taking place yesterday at Sutton Park reduced the number of athletes able to compete.
