Near miss for Sparkhill Harriers Triathlon Team Print
On the evening of Friday 14 November four Sparkhill Harriers competed in the Foxhollies Charity Triathlon Challenge in support of Children in Need.
Vicki Bone, Patrick Finnegan, Bernie Waring and Rob Mills split the various activities between them (1500m swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run) to finish a creditable 4th out of eleven teams competing.  Although we narrowly missed the podium this time, we will be back stronger, fitter and hungrier next year!
However, there was some glory for the Harriers as Julie Brookes and her three friends ("Team B") came first, destroying all those around them with a powerhouse performance from her team, including our former Harrier Steve Brown.
It was a fantastic event and extremely well-organised by the Foxhollies staff and at the presentation afterwards there was some very nice food,  so next year we hope to be getting more Sparkhill teams out.
The Sparkhill team raised £140 and the event overall raised a total of £1,715 for Children in Need.
Overall it was a great evening so make sure you get involved next time!!!

For the attention of officials:

The course map and details for the above fixture is now on the league’s website. Can I repeat what it states therein;  there is no parking within the park apart from disabled badge holders. Everyone must park on the surrounding streets. Please pass this on to your athletes and their parents because failure to comply could mean we will be unable to use this venue in the future.

BBC South Today Unsung Hero Award 2014: Bernie Wilkins. Print
Those of you who have been members of the club for a few years may remember Bernie Wilkins who was a popular road and cross country runner especially during the 1970s. Although Bernie moved to work near Abingdon, he still represented the club in races for years afterwards. Bernie has just won the BBC South Today Unsung Hero Award 2014 for his coaching work with Abingdon Amblers A.C. and will be part of the audience at the Sports Personality of the Year in Glasgow. There are still some of us running who made the annual trip across the channel in November organised by Bernie to run around the castle town of Guerande in Northern France. Bernie's fluent French was very useful, especially during interviews on the local radio station and stays with local families.
Well done Bernie.
