Parkrun PB and Course Record for Sparkhill Junior Print

One of our junior Sparkhill Harriers, Ben Frost, recently set the Junior M10 course record for the 5k Park Run at Cannon Hill.  On 14 March wearing his Sparkhill Harriers vest, Ben ran the course in 20.36 beating his own previous PB by an impressive 21 seconds as well as becoming the fastest runner for his age group on this course.

The current M10 bests can be see here .

Congratulations to Ben and well done to Dave and Ambrose who are clearly doing such a good job developing our young talent.

Midland vets road relays Print
NOT to be confused with the midland road relays at Sutton Park ...

The Midland vets road relays take place on Sunday 26th April from the YHA National Forest, 48 Bath Lane, Moira, Swadlincote DE12 6BD which is just off the M42 and is quick and easy to get to (next to Conkers).

Start at 11.00 am. Each leg is one lap of 4.4kms. The course is totally traffic free within the YHA forest - we have entered on three previous occasions and are currently the M55 champions. Those that have run before will tell you it is a very relaxed atmosphere on a good course, there is no need to fear you will be out of your depth. It's probably easier than a Tuesday night interval session!

Teams are in the age groups of 35-44. 45-54. 55-64. 65+

Please contact myself if you are interested so that I can assess which teams to enter and pass the word around to those not on my e-mail list.

Remember - you don't have to be the club's best runners to compete - just run and enjoy, wearing the black and red of the club.

Congratulations to John Mills on receiving England Athletics Regional Volunteer 2014 Award Print
England Athletics has recognised John Mills' services to athletics in the region by naming him 2014 Volunteer of the Year for the West Midlands.

These annual awards provide a unique opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions of people who give their time, energy and expertise to our sport.

He was presented with a trophy by the Club President, Dr Grahame Cooper, at our club night on 13 January 2015 with many of our junior and senior members present.

The award recognises John's contribution over many years to athletics both as a runner and more recently as an official.  John has contributed hugely to Sparkhill Harriers since he joined in 1952.  A dedicated and talented runner, John ran for Sparkhill Harriers and represented Warwickshire and Midland Counties.

He continues to be a big part of the club supporting our runners and officiating at numerous events.

In addition to our congratulations, the club wishes to offer our thanks to John - and his wife Molly - for their continuing contribution to Sparkhill Harriers.

Grahame Cooper wins National Indoor Rowing Championship Print

On Sunday 8 February Grahame Cooper competed in the British Indoor Rowing Championships held at the British Olympic Velodrome in London.  Taking part in the Men's Lightweight 80 - 84 category, Grahame completed the 2K in 8mins 18.9 secs to take the gold medal.  As ever Grahame competed in his Sparkhill Harriers vest.

To put Grahame's performance into perspective, until two weeks ago the national record for this event stood at 8:18.7 (Grahame's great rival, Geoff Knight, shattered the record a fortnight ago taking nearly 37 seconds of the previous time!).

Congratulations to Grahame: this was an excellent performance at the highest level of the sport, particularly given the disruptions to his training through injuries over recent months.
