UK Inter-Counties Championships, Cofton Park - 9th March 2013 Print
Hi All,

As you can see from the attached email, we are looking for volunteers to assist at the above major athletics event.

There is a need to arrive in time for the 10.15am briefing and the races will finish at about 3.30pm.

This is a great opportunity to be involved and watch top cross-country races.

If you would like to help out, please let me know by 12th February and, if you do not already have one, let me know what size bib you will need and the travel mileage.

Regards

Gavin

Training at the NIA Print

Advanced notice for your diaries.

We shall be arranging a training session for seniors at the NIA on Tues 5th February in place of the normal Tuesday night session. We did this last year and I think everyone enjoyed it immensely. This is a unique opportunity to train on the temporary indoor track erected for the indoor athletics event.

Please meet at the Community Hall, St Vincent Street at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start. I believe the cost is around £3.00 per person and changing facilities are available. You advised to bring plenty of fluids as it gets very dry in there. The nearest parking is the Community Hall car park.

For those who can't make it we will still  publish a default session from Fox Hollies.

Full details can be found here .

Welfare Provision Print

Martin and Gill Millicheap, our current Welfare Officers have indicated their wish to step down at the next AGM. The Committee are taking this opportunity to review the current changing and expanding needs for the provision of welfare within Sparkhill Harriers. We envisage that in future Welfare Officers will be helped by a number of Deputies or Assistants to ensure that there is always a welfare person available every Tuesday and Thursday without it becoming a burden on any individual.

Apart from the Committee’s commitment to the welfare of all club members, it is an integral requirement for Club Accreditation that we provide trained personnel in this field. On Wednesday January 23rd at 7:00 pm there will be a short training course entitled ’Time to Listen’ at Sutton Coldfield AC, Wyndley Park, Sutton Coldfield. This is promoted by England Athletics and the Birmingham and Black Country Athletics Network. We will pay the fees and attenders will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Rob Mills will be going. Please contact him to register your interest in attending and, possibly, to share transport.

We would ask any Club Member who might be interested in helping the Club in this way with this development to contact Rob Mills as soon as possible.

The committee.

Meeting at the club house for training Print

All Tuesday sessions advertised on the website are subject to change especially in the case of weather. Since we are due a cold snap it may become necessary to cancel the proposed session and replace with something safer -  I am thinking specifically of icy pavements or snow. The decision may be taken before setting out from the club house so I would suggest meeting at Fox Hollies rather than the venue when the weather is very poor. It is safe to say that this will apply throughout the winter months.

I will endeavour to give as much notice as possible via the website but this may not always be feasible.

This is relevant to Tuesday sessions only. Thursday track sessions and Saturday XC sessions should be able to continue as normal.

Future Coaching Development Print
Sparkhill Harriers is currently seeking to develop the coaching capacity and support within the club for both senior and junior members.  Several of our seniors have undertaken courses with England Athletics and Craig and Barry are currently working towards achieving the Coach in Running Fitness qualification.

On the junior side of the club several parents and senior members have expressed an interest in undertaking the training course to qualify as Junior Coach Assistants. This will involve two days of training provided by England Athletics.  It is intended that the club will pay for this training as an investment in our future development with those of us qualifying as Junior Coach Assistants agreeing to help out Dave and Ambrose on one or two evenings per month (as is currently done on an informal basis by several parents).  This qualification will also provide a stepping stone to further training to become a fully-qualified coach in the future should you wish to develop further.

Rob Mills is in contact with England Athletics and the Birmingham Athletics Network to arrange possible future dates and venues for the training: it is anticipated that we will be able to arrange for the training to be delivered locally.

You can view details of the coaching assistant award and the various development pathways here .

We hope to train up to a dozen or so parents/seniors.

Please contact Rob if you are interested in taking up this opportunity.

Thanks,

Rob
