Maurice Herriott - England Athletics hall of fame (updated) Print

Congratulations to Sparkhill Olympian, Maurice Herriot, who was inducted into the England Athletics hall of Fame.

Among his many achievements was a silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the Steeplechase.

Bernard Wilkins writes >>

Maurice finally took his rightful place in the England Athletics Hall of Fame last week.  Maurice won the AAA steeplechase title 8 times between 1959 and 1967, but will probably be best remembered for the rip-roaring finish that took him to the silver medal in that event in the Tokyo Olympics of 1964.  In that final Maurice set a new British record of 8:32.4, revising the 8:33.0 that he had set in his heat just 2 days earlier.  These performances came on a well-used cinder track, and we can only speculate on what they might have been on the synthetic surfaces of today.

Under the guidance of Tom Heeley, Maurice never was a high-mileage athlete, preferring instead intensive high-quality training at race pace.  Nevertheless, this approach still enabled him to place highly in the national cross country championships (then held over 9 miles).  Cross country was always a vital feature in Maurice’s yearly programme (younger Harriers take note), and after his retirement from international competition in 1968 he continued to turn out for the club in the Birmingham league.  His final race was on our then home course at Light Hall School in November 1970.  I remember this race extremely well, because with us both in the scoring 6 Maurice was continually exhorting me to greater efforts over the final mile or so.  In the finishing funnel, I was completely wiped out while Maurice looked as though he’d been for an afternoon stroll – which he probably had.

Maurice was inducted by his friend and Tokyo room-mate Basil Heatley, another GB silver medallist from those Games.  It has been a long wait, but justice has at last been done.
