Stratford Summer 6, Wilmcote, Sat 27th June 2015 Print

Thanks to Stratford AC for another excellent race in the WRRL .

A good contingent of harriers attended on a warm and  muggy evening. Andy Hussey was first in for us (not yet a harrier but we will adopt anyone if they are quick enough) and Jane was our first lady with an another impressive time.

Thanks to all the runners, supporters and pets for making it an enjoyable evening including drinks and nibbles at the local hostelry.

Sphinx AC Summer 5, Memorial Park, Coventry. Weds June 17th 2015 Print

Part of the WRRL , this is a cracking little race which explains why it sells out before the night. Luckily for me Mr Goulding could not take his place so I was able to run instead. Some massive support from other clubs in the region especially Kenilworth, Spa Striders, Northbrook and Massey Ferguson. Unfortunately, there was just me in Sparkhill colours. I was quite nervous before the start as I have done the Memorial Park runs a number of times  but never after such a long lay off from racing and I was unsure what 'race pace' meant these days.

The field is predominantly club runners so the start can be fast and furious. It also means there are always plenty of runners to work with and off whatever level you are running at. The course is largely flat but you have to concentrate on some deceptive inclines. Even the weather was perfect for racing with light drizzle and a cooler evening than of late.

I was delighted to put a marker down at 35.16 so 7 minute miles or there about.  Coventry Godiva host a similar 5 miler in the same park in August so I will get a chance to measure any progress in a couple of months.

After receiving the finishers medal and water it was off for as much free cake as I could stomach. Perfect.

Congratulations and thanks to Sphinx on hosting another excellent event.

Two Castles Run, Sunday 14th June 2015 Print

Only four Sparkhill Harriers contested the Two Castles 10k on Sunday 14th June. An early morning start time of 9am saw nearly 4,000 runners set off in the sunshine on a well organised race with a very undulating course with loads of spectators along the route and plenty of water stations. Rob Mills ran well considering he only had 24 hour notice after agreeing to take over Andy Wadsworths number after Andy pulled a muscle running in a park run on Saturday morning. Rob ran in the Cannon hill park run himself and a night out until 3am Sunday morning . Leanne Curl and Katie Meredith both ran well as for myself a good run 2mins slower than normal just not my day but not a bad way to celebrate my 50th year as a Sparkhill Harrier. Definitely on for the calender next year.

 Rob Mills  45.16
 540   Mick Edwards   46.28
 893 Leanne Curl   49.35
 1012   Katie Meredith 50.29

3,835 runners finished
