In atrocious conditions of cold, wet and wind (a 25mph headwind) I was really pleased with my time of 3:57:34!

Greater Manchester Marathon, Sunday 19 April 2015 Print

Three Sparkhill Harriers ran in the Manchester Marathon last Sunday.

Kevin, Wasim and I all trekked up North for a race that is regularly voted one of the best in the country by the readers of Runners World.

The running conditions were perfect: overcast, dry, no wind and temperature just right.  It is a very flat course with just 54m of gain over the whole route.

The race starts and finishes at Manchester United's  football ground (fortunately - being a Liverpool supporter - we didn't need to go inside!) and the organisation of the event is excellent throughout.  The field is large enough to ensure that there are other runners around you all along the course but without the congestion usually experienced in the London Marathon.  There was great crowd support all the way around with lots of music, the highlight being a primary schools choir as we ran through Altrincham.

The goodies bag at the end was the best I have ever received (still working my way through the sweets and chocolate biscuits) with a good quality technical tee-shirt.

Kevin, Wasim and I all completed the race and Kevin got a good PB.

It is a race I would definitely like to do again and recommend it to anyone who had been unsuccessful in getting a place in London.
