Road Races
Stourbridge Stagger, Sun 7th February 2016 Print
This year was the 25th year of this run organized by Stourbridge RC. 10.3 miles of very mixed terrain, roads, footpaths, bridleways, steps, stiles and kissing gates, plus some very attractive countryside. The organisers add to the intrigue by naming some of the features, Dinosaur Beach, Horsetail Bank, Joan's Delight, Slop Gully & Step Hill  and each present their own challenges. Add to this sunshine in parts made for an enjoyable event. Underfoot the conditions were also very varied, plenty of mud in parts as expected, some large puddles, but other areas were quite firm, the official line from Stourbridge RC went along these lines 'It was a tad muddy out there & tough conditions this year' which summed it up quite well.
Sparkhill colours were represented by a team of three who finished as below.

 Tahir Ahktar
 Andrew Wadsworth
 316 Margaret Ehrenberg

397 intrepid runners completed the event, all presented with a notable memento of a bright red hand towel embroidered with the words 25th Stourbridge Stagger !

81 entered the ladies only 7K race, both races going off in a mass start and diverging after just about 3km marker

Morrisons Great Birmingham Run, Sun 18th October 2015 Print
Rob Mills writes...
Since it became one of the Great Run series, the cost of entering the Birmingham half-marathon has increased significantly.  I had considered it too expensive for a run around a lot of streets and parks I usually run around for free, but then I thought...
It's local, it's convenient.  Low transport costs.  No need to park the car.  Should support Birmingham, I suppose.  Should fly the Sparkhill flag (well the vest anyway).  Good training for the cross-country season.  It's on the telly.  Coffee at 6/8 Kafe afterwards.  Bound to be some Cadbury's chocolate in the goody bag...
Go on then, why not?
Alcester 10km, Sunday 11th October 2015 Print
Sunday 11th October was the inaugural running of the Alcester 10km. A perfect day for the event, dry, limited breeze and a flat course on closed roads and a general carnival atmosphere within the town. A broad cross section of club runners and fun runners and great support especially in the town itself for the start/finish.

Two Sparkhill entrants and free beer at the end for all runners !

Bournville Leafy 10K Sunday 4 October 2015 Print
Andy Hussey and I did the annual Bournville Leafy 10K race last Sunday on a beautiful sunny Autumn morning.  As ever the race was very well organised with friendly encouraging marshalling around the two-lap course followed by an excellent selection of home-baked cakes at the end. "Mmm... Victoria sponge or chocolate brownie?  I think I'll go for both, I've just run a 10K after all."
My only caveat about the race is the general consensus among the GPS-wearing runners that the course was a little short (I made it 5.8 miles rather than the usual 6.2) so the times were all somewhat flattering.
236 runners finished the race.  Andy ran strongly to finish 13th in 37.09 while I was fairly happy with my 37th overall in 40.37 (particularly pleased to "out-sprint" another M55 vet to get 1st MV55 by the massive margin of 3 seconds!).
Would recommend this race and advise entering early next year as it filled up a fortnight in advance so several runners seeking to enter on the day were disappointed.
