Madrid Marathon, Sunday April 24th 2016 Print

Following hot on the heels of her Manchester marathon run Clare also took in the sights of the Spanish capital.

Clare Bovill writes >

I flew to Madrid to take part in their Marathon on Sunday 24th April.  Having not run marathons so close together I was a little concerned that my legs would not have fully recovered from the previous race.  Thankfully they had and I completed it in a slightly slower 3:55:17.  I had taken the decision not to look at the course - just as well; according to my gps the elevation was 2279ft compared to Manchester's 268ft!  It was a scenic course around much of the centre of Madrid passing such famous sights as the Royal Palace, Royal Opera House and both the Bernabeu stadium (home of Real Madrid) and the Vicente Calderon stadium (home of Athletico Madrid)

Midland vets road relays, National Cycling Centre, Moira, Sunday 17th April. Print

It was a good mornings work for the four Sparkhill age group vets teams competing in the Midland vets road relay championships held at the national cycling centre, Moira on Sunday 17th April.

The course was a lap of just under three miles on the traffic free grit paths that go all around the area. Although it was fairly flat, it was made more difficult by the ‘twisty’ nature of course, indeed at one point there was a section of eight 180 degree ‘chicanes’ to negotiate. Despite this, two Sparkhill teams finished in podium positions:

The M65 team finished 1st (Mick Edwards, Martin Millicheap, Barry Crowley).

The M55 team finished 2nd (Mark Arnold, Tahir Ahktar, Rob Mills)

The M45 team were 6th(Nick Stringer, Darren Riley, Andy Carroll, Paul Shipway)

The W35 were 4th (Jane Bartholomew, Clare Bovill, Manisha Parmar)

Nick won the ‘award’ for the fastest Sparkhill leg on the day.
