Birmingham XC league Division 2, Race#1, Newbold Comwyn, Leamington Spa, Sat 13th November 2016 Print

ImageFirst race of the season is usually done with ladies and all 3 divisions. However, this year it was just the ladies and division 2 that took on the Leaminghton course. Unfortunately, we were missing Darren and Stuart but welcoming Mark, Frank and Andy Manning to the delights of the XC league. This year there was no ditch but we still got to ascend the beacon 3 times. Even after the recent rain it was still fairly firm underfoot though the effect of the ladies race was to churn it up a little and make the surface a little slippier.

English National XC relays, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield, Sat 5th November 2016 Print

ImageGreat conditions and a perfect fast course greeted the 8 men and 3 ladies representing Sparkhill at the national championships.  Non of the usual mud this year and I think all the athletes appreciated the varied terrain and chance to run alongside some of the countries best runners. The ladies even remarked that if anything the course was too short. Not something you usually hear at a cross country race.

This was the 27th successive year this race had been run, and with so many people telling me it was the running highlight of their year, including some more on Sunday I just had to tackle it. Set in a picturesque village to the west of Wolverhampton almost on the Shropshire border, its a 7 mile 11km undulating run, across fields, forest trails, farm tracks in beautiful countryside. Add to that wonderful weather day for running, this is one event that will live long in the memory.
A good mixture of club runners especially from the Black Country and Shropshire, plus a number from south Birmingham clubs, including Tahir & myself wearing the red and black vest. Tahir has posted some pictures on the clubs Facebook site.

Good preparation for the cross country season, with a mixture of surfaces and inclines to provide a real technical challenge. I should also add, hot drinks and harvest cake at the end, as the runners were welcomed back to the village playing fields by the peals of church bells the run is named after.

Provisional results from the day below
